First United Church of Christ
A historic building is in crisis. The Austinburg First United Church of Christ is in desperate need of repair. At the base of the steeple is a built in copper gutter and unbeknown it has been leaking and water has been coming down in between the bricks. There is some significant masonry damage at the base of the steeple due to freezing and thawing. The copper gutter needs to be replaced and also some rotted wood gutter replaced. Because this damage is so high up in the air it will be costly to repair. The church is in need of $50,000 for repairs.
The church organization was formed by the founding fathers of Austinburg in 1801 and was the first church organized in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Our current historic building was built in 1875-76 and the steeple has since served as a landmark and symbol of hope in our rural landscape. Your donation will help restore the steeple to its former glory.
Tour the historic landmarks in Ashtabula County during the annual Covered Bridge Run with CMRO Region 13. Saturday, October 8th, ride your bike, hotrod, muscle car, whatever you’d like… All rides are welcome. Sign-in begins at 10am at Grand River Manor, $10 donation per person.
